The Legacy of Teresa Edwards
Teresa Edwards is the most decorated athlete in the history of Women’s basketball. She has been recorded as being USA Basketball’s female athlete of the year four times in a career. In addition, this five-time Olympian is the only athlete, both male and female, who has participated in five Olympics collected four gold medals.
As a collegiate, Teresa Edwards was a two-time All American selection at the University of Georgia leading the lady Bull Dogs to a pair of Final-4 appearances. After her sophomore season, at age 20, she became the youngest lady to win olympic gold at the 84′ games. Most recognizable globally, she played abroad for nine years throughout the world from Europe and Asia as a professional champion. Here at home, she has been a player and coach in the Women’s National Basketball Association. Longevity and perseverance are staples associated with Teresa Edwards career and her signature is embedded in success as she has lead teams to stand atop of the podium on every occasion. As an ambassador and leader among her peers, Teresa was selected to take the competitor’s Oath at the Opening Ceremonies in Atlanta. .
In 2012, the United States Olympic Committee appointed her chef de mission for the US delegation at the London Olympic Games. Sports illustrated magazine places her as 22nd of the “100 Greatest Female Athletes of the 20th Century”.
Since then Teresa has dedicated her life to paying it forward by using her experience and knowledge to educate and motivate the younger generation. She remains a staunch advocate for women and girls in sports and is instrumental in serving and building-up kids and teens in the community. She also speaks broadly to high school, community events, and universities around the country. She is the author of “Dream with Faith, Legacy Poetry.” Teresa Edwards is the embodiment of winning excellence.
